Our Emergency Management Agency (EMA) team spends their time preparing for anything and everything. During a storm or active emergency , – they’re fast, communicative, efficient , and ready.
But in between those urgent situations, they spend time helping people prepare for emergencies, to make sure we are all working well together – and fast – when disaster strikes. One of those people is Moranda Guy, and you should sleep more peacefully knowing she’s got your back when it comes to preparedness and a fast response. That’s why she is this week’s Staff Spotlight.
Moranda just celebrated her five-year anniversary as the Administrative Officer with EMA, but she’s been in the business of helping people in their time of need for much longer. She started with our E911 team in 2000. Now, she’s the driving force behind our first Emergency Preparedness Fair coming up this weekend (Saturday, September 17 – click here for details ).
It’s an opportunity for all our community partners to work together and talk to the public about how to get ready for anything. From emergency preparedness kits to first aid to a readiness plan – the event is for anyone and everyone , and Moranda is the perfect person to handle it. To hear her tell it, working with the public was a natural step in her life.
“It is a passion of mine to help people. I’ve always considered myself to be a servant leader, and I knew early on I wanted to make the best impact in my community. ” says Moranda. “Emergency Management was that door for me. It was the opportunity to blend my love of people with my love for my community. When it comes to preparedness and emergencies, people turn to their government for guidance, but there’s more we can do as individuals to help our neighbors and families.”
EMA Director Spencer Hawkins agrees and says he’s proud to work with her. “Moranda Guy is a major factor in the success of Macon-Bibb Emergency Management. In her 5 years at the Agency, she has progressed from administrative duties and supporting our operations to running outreach programs like our Emergency Preparedness Fair and the Inter-Faith Security Summit. She continues to give 100% to ensure every citizen of Macon-Bibb County has the resources to be alert and be prepared.”
We asked Moranda to tell us who she is – both at work and home. “I love people and inclusiveness. I’m very compassionate, which I learned from my parents. My dad always told me, don’t do anything or be a part of anything so it can be part of your obituary – do it from the heart. So, I do! Nothing I do is just a title, it’s a part of me. I don’t need recognition or accolades; I just want to love and help people.”
Moranda’s love of people extends beyond her career , though. She was born and raised here in Macon, and she and her husband Eddie are foster parents. They’ve fostered four children and say it’s not just for the child.
“Of course we want to love on the child and give them a sense of security, but we want their parents to know their child is taken care of and has a safe place while they’re in recovery or taking care of themselves. Every situation is different, but it is our responsibility to show love.”
Moranda, you are a light in our community , and we’re better for having you on #TeamMaconBibb!
